Short bowel syndrome and diet / nutrition

Postoperative phases

There are three phases after surgery:

The removal of a part of the small intestine is immediately followed by a period which approximately lasts two weeks and is characterized by a significant loss of fluids and electrolytes (hypersecretion). This fluid loss must be compensated and controlled by feeding fluid, electrolytes and nutrients directly into the bloodstream.

The first phase is followed by a period of adjustment. The fluid loss is significantly reduced within a maximum of twelve months.

The third is characterized by a stabilization and a significant reduction of diarrhea and fatty stools.
